Editors are the people who assist the director in creating the final cut of the production. They tend to work unsociable hours. They are employed on a freelance basis and also tend to work on tv as well as film. They may also work closely with the sound designer to ensure the audio on the final cut of the film is perfect. Editors have several jobs to carry out and several things they need to do. They are as follows: - Work closely with the director to achieve the final cut of the film from the raw footage (rushes). - Work in an edit suite for long hours under pressure. However, alongside the duties of an editor, they will also need to have several other things: - Have a wide experience of the post production process. - Be familiar with a wide range of editing software and equipment. - Be able to work well under pressure. - Be able to lead a team of people. - Have patience and attention to detail. - Have excellent organisational skills. - Have an excellent understanding of the script and narrative of the film. Overall, editors must be able to work for long, unsociable hours in an editing suite and must be able to work very effectively under pressure and while managing a team of people. The easiest way into this job would be to start as a runner in a production office or on a film set. This is normally the way people get into the industry and they will work their way up from there. One of my roles on my final project is editor. Therefore, I will be looking into some YouTube videos and taking inspiration from them instead of a famous film editor as my final project is in fact a YouTube channel. As you can see from the above video. The editing in this video is fairly simple. It includes jump cuts and that's pretty much it. However, some YouTube videos (like the one below from our own channel) uses other editing techniques like using humorous music and 'memes'. Using 'memes' and humorous music can make a video more entertaining and is very common among YouTubers as it can help them get views. Overall, despite the fact that not all of the qualities and duties listed above will apply to editing YouTube videos, the roles are still similar. I personally, will be including jump cuts (as they are mostly unavoidable), humorous music and other humorous techniques to makes the YouTube videos we make as entertaining as possible.

Techniques:After researching some interview techniques, I have come up with a couple I think I will use when conducting my interviews for my research. I will list the techniques I will be using below: 1. Do some background research: Make sure you know who you are interviewing and make sure you have enough information about the person you're interviewing to cater your questions to them. 2. Don't give questions in advance: This will give the person you are interviewing less time to answer your questions. However, this will get a more natural answer form the person you are interviewing, which is what you want. 3. Use pivot questions: This will give the candidate some time to relax during the interview and you will also get a sense of the kind of person the candidate is if you use these questions. Preparation:So far, as a group, we have contacted three people, asking to interview them. Those people are: - Luke Penning, who is a degree student but also runs his own production company and is a social media expert. - Taran Matharu, who is a fantasy author, who started out on Wattpad (a social media website) and is now a New York Times bestseller. - Luke Cutforth, who is a well known YouTuber, turned director and creates stereotypical YouTube videos, such as challenges and vlogs. Luke Penning:Luke Penning is a degree student who also own his own production company and he also does some YouTube on the side. He has agreed to do an interview through message, during which, I will be asking him the following questions: These questions do deter from the interview techniques I listed previously. The reason being, I wanted to cater the question directly towards Luke so I can get the most useful information I possibly can from him. Therefore, the above questions are the ones I decided on when coming up with the final list of questions I had for the interview. Taran Matharu:These questions do follow the above techniques a bit more closely. I have used pivot questions, I didn't send the questions in advance and I did some research in preparation for the interview (I re-read Taran's books, etc.). The below questions are what I intend to ask him in our Skype interview: Overall, I believe these questions will be good to ask as I believe they will get me the information I need to continue with my project.
A director is the main creative force behind the production. The director has a vision of what they want the production to look like and it is partly their job to get that to become a reality (the producer will hep with this). The director behind a production needs to carry out several duties. These include: - Casting - Script editing - Shot composition - Editing (sometimes) - Directing actors (and crew) on set The director also must know all about the creative and technical aspects of the production. The reason being, they are the only link between the creative team and technical team on a production. Apart from the duties you need to carry out as a director, you will also need to have several qualities and be able to do other things to be able to carry out the jobs that need done: -You must be committed to your project. - You need to be a confident leader as you're leading the crew and cast. - You need to be able to make decisions quickly. - You need to be able to collaborate with others. - You need to motivate the team. - You need to have extensive knowledge of both the creative and technical sides of the production. - You need to be able to work intensely for long hours. - Be able to remain calm under pressure. Overall, the director needs to be able to work for long hours and do their job well. Otherwise, the production will be cancelled and not succeed. The easiest way into any job in the film industry is to start as a runner on a film set or in a production office and you will have to work your way up from there. It will take a lot of time before you reach your desired role but if you have patience, you will be able to do it. One of my roles on my project is director. Therefore, I will be researching into one of my favourite directors and then explain what inspiration I will take away from them. despite the fact my end product for my final project is not a single piece of work. Ridley Scott:
Ridley's movies always tend to have some kind of urban setting and also ten to involve family relationships at the core of the story. For example, in Gladiator (2000), there are several family relationships covered in the film: Maximus and Marcus-Aurellius, Marcus-Aurelius and Commodus and Maximus' relationship with his son is briefly covered. Scott also tends to have a good reputation for getting good performances form actors (much like Christopher Nolan). Therefore, he most defiantly knows how to carry out his role very well. He most defiantly has the qualities needed to be a great director and his filmography and reputation shows that. When participating in my role as director during our project, I plan to carry out all of the above duties and try and gain the qualities I need. I am already able to make quick decisions and work collaboratively. However, there are qualities I need to work on. For example, I need to work on staying calm under pressure and I need to work on my technical knowledge. The inspiration I will be taking from Ridley Scott is I want to look into introducing a narrative into our videos and I also would like to experiment with multi-camera videos. Sources:
