A mockumentary is, in basic terms, a fictional documentary. A mockumentary depicts fictional events as if they were real by suing a documentary format. Here are a few examples of some mockumentaries: - The Office UK (2001-2003) - Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) - Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) - Summer Heights High (2007) - Come Fly With Me (2010) - Parks and Recreation (2009 - 2015) - Magic Funhouse (2016) The above mockumentaries are just some of the most popular ones around nowadays. However, mockumentaries have been around for a long time. You can read about the history of mockumentaries and parodies in my next post. Documentaries tend to have several conventions: - Interviews. - A narrator/voice overs. - "Real" footage of events/re-enactments. - Use of text/titles to say who you are interviewing in interview sections. However, Mockumentaries tend to take this conventions and use them but the events are fictional and normally comical. I plan to take some of these conventions and out them into practice for our YouTube channel because it is kind of in a documentary format as it is meant to depict kind of real life. However, our channel could also be considered a parody as we are taking a universe and making it comical and we will be exaggerating certain traits of our characters. A parody is basically an imitation of a story or genre etc. and it is exaggerated and normally made to be comical. Here are some examples of parodies: - Austin Powers (1997) - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - Life of Brian (1979) - Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993) - Blazing Saddles (1974) The above parodies are just some that I discovered. However, despite the fact that my final project isn't a parody film, it is a parody YouTube channel and therefore, will be similar and contain some of the same conventions of a parody film. In conclusion, mockumentaries and parodies are similar. They are both comical and both exaggerate their core material. Whether that be traits from characters or whether that be the storyline itself. Mockumentaries and parodies are exaggerated versions of documentaries and films. In our final project, we will be exaggerating the personality traits of our characters and we will be sometimes filming in a documentary format. Sources:

Mockumentaries:A mockumentary is in basic terms, a fictional documentary. A mockumentary is a production that depicts fictional events as if they were real (in a documentary format) and a parody is an exaggeration or imitation of a certain genre, story, etc. One of the earliest mockumentaries was a radio mockumentary: Orson Welles' 1938 broadcast of "War Of The Worlds". Radio dramas such as War Of The Worlds were what started the mockumentary genre. However, some of the earliest TV/visual mockumentaries were: 1) A Hard Day's Night (1964): Written by Alun Owen, supposedly depicting several days in the lives of The Beatles. This would be one of the first ever feature length mockumentaries. 2) David Holzman's Diary (1967): Directed by Jim McBride, David Holzman's Diary is a mockumentary where Jim sits down and recalls his life, almost like an autobiography. However, it is a false autobiography as this film is created out of metaphors. There are several more early mockumentaries which you can read about here. However, nowadays, mockumentaries are still rather common. However, they are more so on tv. For example: 1) Summer Heights High (2007): Written by Chris Lilley, Summer Heights High is a mockumentary series, following two students and a teacher around Summer Heights High School: self-absorbed private school girl Ja'mie King, disobedient student Jonah Takalua and megalomaniac drama teacher Mr G. 2) The Office (US) (2005-2013): Based on the BBC hit series, The Office (UK), this mockumentary series follows a group of office workers during their everyday lives, including their fights, problems, etc. 3) Parks and Recreation (2009-2015): Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, Parks and Recreation is a mockumentary series set in Indiana, this series follows an Indiana town's group of officials while they try to make their town a better place. So, mockumentaries originally started out as radio dramas and then moved along with the times and moved onto TV and film. Mockumentaries have always been a popular genre and is msot definatly a unique genre. Parodies:A parody is basically an imitation of a story or genre etc. and it is exaggerated and normally made to be comical. Above, are posters for some of the earliest parodies. 1) Mud and Sand (1922): Written by Tom Miranda, Mud and Sand is a parody (starring Stan Laurel), making fun of Rudolph Valentino's film Blood and Sand (1922). This film follows two bull fighters. When one of them dies, the other goes on to be a national hero but gets involved and has an affair with a married woman. 2) Young Frankenstein (1974): Written by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks, Young Frankenstein (1974) is a parody of the original Frankenstein (1931). This film follows the grandson of Frankenstein travelling to Transylvania where he discovers the secret to bringing a dead person back to life. 3) Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993): Written by J.D. Shapiro, Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993) is a parody/spoof of Robin Hood in general. However, it is a parody of Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991) in particular. Even though the Monty Python parodies are rather old, they are still very popular today. Also, films like Shaun Of The Dead (2004) are very popular also. 1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975): Written by the Monty Python group (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) is a parody of the Arthurian Legend and their quest for the holy grail. This film follows "King Arthur" and his "Knights" on their quest for the holy grail and to return to Camelot. This film ultimatly ends with "Arthur" and his "Knights" getting arrested for trespassing. 2) Shaun of the Dead (2004): Written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead (2004) is a parody of the zombie movie genre. In regular zombie films, there's usually a strong and heroic main character. However, in this film, there are two 'ordinary' guys at the centre of the film. This film follows two guys and what happens when a disease spreads around and turns people into zombies and how these two guys along with some others survive it. 3) Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979): Written by the Monty Python group (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin), Life of Brian (1979) is a parody of Jesus' life according to the bible. This parody follows a man called Brian who spends his life being mistaken for the messiah. It seems that parodies have been around for a long time, pretty much since films have been around. Parodies have most defiantly evolved over the years however. Nowadays you can make a parody of pretty much anything. Sources:
