A mockumentary is, in basic terms, a fictional documentary. A mockumentary depicts fictional events as if they were real by suing a documentary format. Here are a few examples of some mockumentaries: - The Office UK (2001-2003) - Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) - Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) - Summer Heights High (2007) - Come Fly With Me (2010) - Parks and Recreation (2009 - 2015) - Magic Funhouse (2016) The above mockumentaries are just some of the most popular ones around nowadays. However, mockumentaries have been around for a long time. You can read about the history of mockumentaries and parodies in my next post. Documentaries tend to have several conventions: - Interviews. - A narrator/voice overs. - "Real" footage of events/re-enactments. - Use of text/titles to say who you are interviewing in interview sections. However, Mockumentaries tend to take this conventions and use them but the events are fictional and normally comical. I plan to take some of these conventions and out them into practice for our YouTube channel because it is kind of in a documentary format as it is meant to depict kind of real life. However, our channel could also be considered a parody as we are taking a universe and making it comical and we will be exaggerating certain traits of our characters. A parody is basically an imitation of a story or genre etc. and it is exaggerated and normally made to be comical. Here are some examples of parodies: - Austin Powers (1997) - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - Life of Brian (1979) - Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993) - Blazing Saddles (1974) The above parodies are just some that I discovered. However, despite the fact that my final project isn't a parody film, it is a parody YouTube channel and therefore, will be similar and contain some of the same conventions of a parody film. In conclusion, mockumentaries and parodies are similar. They are both comical and both exaggerate their core material. Whether that be traits from characters or whether that be the storyline itself. Mockumentaries and parodies are exaggerated versions of documentaries and films. In our final project, we will be exaggerating the personality traits of our characters and we will be sometimes filming in a documentary format. Sources:
