I did a second interview with Luke Penning. Luke Penning is currently studying towards a film production degree. However, he has been running his own production company, Village Green Pictures (mostly by himself until recently) since he was sixteen years old. The company has been around for almost three years. Luke has a very detailed knowledge of how to use social media to get your work noticed as he manages all of the company's social media himself and he has built himself an audience and has had quite a lot of success in the short time he's ran this company. Overall, the interview with Luke helped me a lot. The reason being, even though he's only a little bit older than me, he has a wide range of knowledge on how to run a successful social media account (which is the main thing I wanted to find out form these interviews.

A little while ago I interviewed Taran Matharu. Taran is a New York Times bestselling author of the Summoner Series and has released two published novels (The Novice and The Inquisition) as well as an e-book (Origins, which is a prequel to The Novice and The Inquisition). He also still has a second prequel on Wattpad (where he started) called Rory, which tells another story set before the times of The Novice and The Inquisition. Taran started out on a site called Wattpad and uploaded his work there and eventually got noticed, got an agent and got a publishing deal and now is an author for a living. You can watch the interview below, which will tell you more about how Taran himself got to where he is today and also he tells us how to run a successful social media account (specifically Wattpad, but it can be related to YouTube too). I also uploaded the raw footage of the interview: What have I learned? How is this information important?
Taran gave me some insight as to how the fantasy genre will sell and what kind of audience we might be facing aswell. overall, I would consider this interview successful as I gained a lot of knowledge of our potential audience and I also learned a lot about how to get noticed on social media and how to promote yourself. How is this information important? Overall, I think the interview with Taran helped me a lot in terms of planning my actual project. the reason being, he told me how to gain an audience (even though he used Wattpad as an example and we will be using YouTube). How could this research be improved? I would consider this interview a success. However, to help more with my research, i feel like I should have asked a few more questions about fans and fandoms as I could have gotten a perspective from someone who has fans. For our first interview, we interviewed Luke Penning. Luke is a university student, currently studying a film production degree. He also owns his own production company, that has become very successful over the past three years and is actively making projects outside of his degree. I have embedded the interview I had with Luke below: What have I learned?
Luke's answer to question five was particularly helpful for me as it gave me a few ideas on how to run a successful social media account. This is helpful to me as I will be running two social media accounts throughout my final project (an Instagram page and a YouTube channel). For example, Luke advised to add graphics to your social media, which I intend to do and he also recommended that you post regularly on your social media, which I also intend to try to do. Why is this information important? This information will help me because I will be able to promote my project effectively by taking the advice Luke gave me. How could I improve this research? I think I could have improved this research by asking a couple more questions about the social media side of things. However, apart form that, I'd say this interview went well. It may feel like social media has been around forever. However, it hasn't. Below is a timeline of when different social medias were created. As you can see from the timeline, not all of the social medias we all know today have been around for that long. For example, Facebook has only been around for 13 years and YouTube has only been around for 12 and Twitter for 11! Then we don't see Instagram until 2010 and Snapchat doesn't come around until 2011! YouTube:YouTube was first launched in 2005 by founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawad Karim. The first ever video that was uploaded to the site was called "Me at the zoo". In the beginning, YouTube was a hub for anyone to upload just random videos. However, nowadays, despite there is the odd funny animal video and random video, the main type of content on YouTube now is vlogs (video blogs). People now make a living from vlogging their lives and posting it to YouTube. YouTubers now make money through ad revenue, which is when an advert is played before the video and therefore, this will give the YouTuber ad revenue money. Below I will explain what different kinds of content there are on YouTube and I will explain a little bit about them. Funny Animal Videos:One of the first major trends that appeared on YouTube was the funny animal trend. I have linked a compilation of some 'funny' animal videos above. These kinds of videos can get millions of views very easily nowadays. The funny animal video trend is a trend that has been around since YouTube started. However, when YouTube first started, people were just using it to share random videos and back when YouTube began, nobody really thought that anyone would ever turn YouTubing into a career. Vlogging:Vlogging is another YouTube trend that has been around for a while. However, there's many styles of vlogging, which I will get around to explaining in a later post. However, vlogging is basically someone sitting in front of a camera and talking, recording what happens during their day or anything really. Vlogging can cover a lot of things. However, nowadays, vlogging basically means recording your day. Vlogging has been around for a while. However, the future of vlogging is very uncertain and I, personally am unsure if it will be as big of a deal in a few years as it is now. Twitter:Twitter was first launched in 2006 by founders Evan Williams, Noah Glass, Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone. Twitter has always been a site that is used more for the business side of things. However, nowadays, there are some accounts (e.g. fan accounts) that are not intended for business reasons. However, really, there are two sides to twitter: business and fandom. The business side is used by many types of people. For example, YouTube creators to interact with fans, etc. However, the fandom side of twitter is filled with fan accounts where fans of certain fandoms and things will show their support for whoever/whatever they are a fan of. Personally, I think twitter has most defiantly evolved over the years. The reason being, twitter started out as a way for business people to network and nowadays, everyone has twitter. I believe that twitter will continue as it is with the two sides: fandom and business. Instagram:Instagram was first launched in 2010 (only 6 years ago!) by founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Instagram is a photo sharing app that is available on both desktop and mobile but you can only upload content from your mobile. Instagram has grown to become one of the most popular social media apps in the world, particularly among 13-16 year olds. I would say there are several sides to Instagram: photography, personal photo albums, art and comedy. Instagram started out as a place for people to just share any photos they wanted. However, after a while, people started to catch onto the app and now it's being used to build a following and create people's brands. For example, many photographers build their following through Instagram and can actually get work because they have built a reputation and a following on Instagram. Then again, people have always and continue to post personal pictures on Instagram too as they would on Facebook. Then there's the art side of Instagram where artists use Instagram to trade, advertise and promote their art and then artists will build up an audience on their Instagram and sometimes earn money through commissions. The final side to Instagram is comedy. A lot of comedians tend to post short videos to Instagram now. The reason for this, I think is the fact that Vine shut down and therefore, people who create videos that are too short for YouTube need somewhere to host their work and Instagram has been the place where comedians have gone to. My prediction for the future of Instagram is that it will continue as it is but will continue to gain more users form younger people (ages 13-16). Snapchat:Snapchat was launched in 2011 by founder Evan Spiegel. Snapchat didn't really grow much until around 2015. Snapchat has always been an app where people share their day to day lives. However, it is now being used to create so many different types of content. For example, people are now making movies, doing film reviews, photography, and people are making careers out of content creating on snapchat, similar to YouTube. Tumblr:Tumblr was launched in 2007 by founder David Karp. Tumblr is a blogging website, most popular among 13-18 year old and onwards. Tumblr has always been a place where people have posted blogs, creative writing and has for a long time been considered the centre of fandoms on the internet. Tumblr has always been and always will be I think, a place where fans of certain things (fandoms) will continue to post blog posts, stories, gifs (moving pictures) and images and more. I don't think Tumblr will change too much in terms of the types of content that people will upload. Facebook:Facebook was first launched in 2004 by founders Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook began as a site that was only used by students in Harvard university. However, then everyone in the surrounding area began to sue it, then everyone in the US began using it and thirteen years later, nearly everyone has a Faceboook account. Personally, I don't think Facebook will be as widely used in a few years. there is already evidence of this as a lot of younger teenagers don't even know what Facebook is. therefore, in a few years, I don't think it will be widely used, at least among younger people. Conclusion:Overall, I think that all these social medias have a very interesting history to them and it is crazy to think they haven't been around for that long. However, I do think that in the future, some of these social medias will be possibly extinct and some will continue to grow. This information is important because, if I'm going to be making social media a big part of my project, I need to know how it has evolved, how it works now and how it may change in the future so I can adapt how I use it in order to gain an audience and create content catered to the times and my audience.
